“The Plastics from the movie Mean Girls plan major sabotage in the mall.” Photo Credit: Naluda Magazine Every October 3rd, us die hard fans wear pink and post all over social media about Aaron Samuels asking Katy Heron what day it was…well you guys… it’s finally here, Mean Girls Day. It’s the one day of the year we can all gush over our favorite guilty pleasure and if you haven’t seen the movie, watch it now, and thank me later (also, there are spoilers, so scoot!). This outrageous film with Lindsay Lohan and Tina Fey never fails to make me laugh. But in a world where we could possibly have our first female president, I think it’s time to talk about being the best woman you can be in the girl world, which Mean Girls has always inspired us women to do…even Karen! Mean Girls has so many female characters, partly because it gives each female watching a chance to inject themselves into the film, but also it gives us a sense of right and wrong, and funny verses inappropriate. This balance is really cool, that doesn’t exist in a lot of films. Each female in this movie lets us know we are on the right path… let me explain. Sharon Norbury (aka Tina Fey)“Sharon Norbury tells Katy Heron that she’s a ‘pusher’.” Photo Credit: Screenshot of Mean Girls Movie Okay, honestly I’m starting off with her because this woman is fire. She is the Mathlete Coach, she’s a bartender, and a teacher on top of it all. To some that looks like someone trying to keep their head above water, but I think it’s a boss-ass woman taking control of her life. She is witty, gorgeous, and extremely intelligent. If you don’t have a role model already, it’s this woman! She got divorced, and trucks on. Sure she can be sassy, but that’s a lot of stuff to take care off. #LadyBoss Mrs. George (aka Amy Poehler)“Mrs. George asks Katy Heron if she wants alcohol in her drink.” Photo Credit: Screenshot of Mean Girls Movie This one is really funny, and honestly I totally think this woman is a really cool mom. She’s kind of doing what some parents don’t agree with, but she’s trying her best, and always gives her daughter great opportunities to be whoever she is. She’s supportive, honest, and totally caring. Not everything about her is perfect, although she pretends it is, but she is just being a really understanding mother of her daughter going through adolescence. Regina George (aka Rachel McAdams)“Regina George realizing her shirt was cut and not caring.” Photo Credit: Screenshot of Mean Girls Movie Okay, I realize she is the villain of this movie, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn from her! If there is one thing about Regina you can’t contest, is her confidence. Sometimes it’s buried in insecurity, and she overcompensates, but don’t we all do that to protect ourselves? Even though Regina makes a lot of mistakes in this movie, in the end, she learns, and that’s what we all can do to be better people and better women, is to just make the effort. Janis Ian (aka Lizzy Caplan)“Izzy Caplan as Janis Ian tells her 'your mom's chest hair' joke.” Photo Credit: Screenshot of Mean Girls Movie I’m obsessed with Janis Ian, because this girl doesn’t give two lipsticks about what people think of her. That is some lady power if I’ve ever seen it! She obviously went through this thing with Regina that changed the course of her being, which is something I think a lot of us go through when we deal with trauma of some sort. She’s definitely over compensating for what happened in the past, but during the whole movie Janis stays honest and open, which is the most important thing in all aspects of life, even if she’s a little too blunt. “Aaron Samuels asks Katy Heron what day it was…it was October 3.” Photo Credit: Screenshot of Mean Girls Movie. There are so many fetch components of Mean Girls; the comedy, the real life lessons, the exaggerated ones, and not to mention all the personalities. Each character is designed to teach you something, and in a movie focused on women, we can learn from each person and make our woman world more powerful. Empower yourself on October 3rd! Watch Mean Girls and see what changes all these people went through and how you, too, can make a transformation into a better person. Being mean is only a defense, when we are all on the same path to figuring out this whole life thing, be understanding, and just try to improve on your greatness that exists within you already! Happy October 3rd!
